Combat Academy Syllabus

Below is a quick look at what you will be required to know to proceed through the grades. For a complete and in-depth syllabus please visit Combat Academy UK downloads page. Grading exam days are held twice a year and are a demanding test of Combat Academy UK students. It will take on average around 5 years to achieve Black Belt status.

Red Belt - Double wrist attack
|
- Correct Bow & Etiquette.
- All Attacking & Defending Stances.
- Forward break roll on dominant arm.
- Simple left and right arm break falls.
- 8 techniques to include; punch palm strike, sweep, hip throw and outside wrist lock.
- Overall aim – demonstration of strong stances.

Yellow Belt - Double Jacket Grab
|
- Demonstration of previous syllabus.
- Backward break roll.
- 8 techniques from double jacket attack, to include; elbow strike, half shoulder throw.
- Knowledge of three simple stretches.
- Overall aim – the movement of strong stances.

Orange Belt - Single Strangle
|
- Demonstration of previous syllabus.
- Front slam break fall.
- 8 techniques from single strangle to include; back fist, full shoulder throw, under arm head throw.
- Overall aim – technique.

| Start practicing your kickboxing technique and sparring now. It will form part of your grading assessment from Green belt onwards. Make sure you have the correct equipment too. |

Green Belt - Double Front Strangle
|
- Demonstration of previous syllabus.
- Forward break roll on non-dominant arm.
- The ability to teach advanced stretches and cool down to a Small group.
- 8 techniques from a double front strangle to include: spear hand, jacket throw and crab scissors.
- Overall aim – flow of technique.

| Expect both ground fighting and kickboxing to be part of your grading assessment. Make sure you have trained in these regularly to improve your skill level. |
| Now you have achieved Green belt you must attend a High Grade Master Class every year before applying for your next belt assessment and can now attend Ian Gauldie’s High grade Class on a Wednesday evening. |

Blue Belt - Single Roundhouse Punch
|
- Demonstration of previous syllabus.
- A forward break roll without the use of hands.
- Training as a supervised assistant instructor on a regular basis.
- 8 techniques from single roundhouse punch. To include: ridge hand, throws from wrist and arm lock positions.
- Overall aim – speed of technique.

Brown Belt - Weapon Defenses
|
- Demonstration of previous syllabus.
- Weapon defenses against baton and knife attack.
- Ground fighting bout.
- Testimonial (and grading nomination) from your instructor that You have gained experience as a supervised assistant instructor Over the past year.
- All adult candidates will be assessed on Coaching skills on the grading day.

Black Belt
|
- Extremely demanding physical test requiring demonstration of the complete syllabus.
- A minimum of two years of preparation.
- Applicants will only be accepted if in good standing with the Association, and will be required to have a high standard of technique and moral character.
- Testimonial (and grading nomination) from your instructor that you have gained experience as a supervised assistant instructor over the past year.
- Controlled sparring against two opponents at once forms part of the assessment.
