History of Ju-Jitsu
Ju-Jitsu roughly translated means ‘gentle art’ and can be traced back to Japan were it is believed to have been practised over 2000 years ago. This Martial art has evolved from the time the disarmed Samurai warriors used it to secure an opponent in a lock or grip thus enabling him to immobilise his opponent, to one where emphasis is on throwing, locking joints, chokes and strangles. Muscle strength does not play a major role in the art as it relies on speed, balance and leverage. Height, weight and reach are practically nullified by Ju-Jitsu making it a popular Martial art for all who train.
History of Kickboxing
Kickboxing started in the US during the 1970's when American karate practitioners became frustrated with strict controls on martial arts competitions that didn't allow full contact kicks and punches. Many questions were raised when the sport began about the high risk of injury. As a result, safety rules were improved and protective clothing was added. As this is a relatively new sport there are no long-term traditions. We train in light continuous which is a refined from the original full contact although we do still wear the protective clothing.
